I went back and forth on whether to set this story at a religious college. Since I attended a Christian school myself, I was afraid readers might interpret “On Campus” as a straight-up autobiography (it’s not).

 

In the end, I decided I could be a much more authoritative storyteller if I set the story in an environment I understood well. I don’t personally know what it’s like to attend a non-religious college, and my fear of not crafting a convincing atmosphere won out over any other concerns.
